One Brand, Many Worlds: What Branding Across Cultures Has Taught Me
Over more than ten years and three continents, I’ve had the chance to build brands for businesses in India, the UAE, and Europe. Every market has taught me something new about what branding actually means in practice — and I keep landing on the same conclusion: the principles of good branding are universal, but how they show up on the ground is deeply local.
India: Emotion and Legacy Come First
In India, branding rarely works without an emotional and generational anchor. Audiences respond to stories — family history, inherited trust, and heritage carry real weight. Colour especially isn’t decorative; it’s symbolic. Red signals auspiciousness, white purity, gold prosperity. Ignore those cues and even a technically excellent brand can feel like it doesn’t belong.
UAE: Prestige Meets Multicultural Fluency
The UAE plays by different rules entirely. It’s one of the most multicultural markets on earth, which means a brand has to be fluent across dozens of cultural reference points at once, while still reading as ambitious and prestigious. Confidence and speed are the local currency — but so is genuine cultural sensitivity, because the person next to you in line could be from anywhere in the world.
Europe: Restraint Over Spectacle
Working on VéloRouge in Strasbourg showed me how much European markets — at least the ones I’ve worked in — reward simplicity, sustainability, and authenticity over spectacle. Overselling reads as a warning sign there. Restraint is what signals confidence, and trust has to be earned through clarity rather than volume.
What Holds True Everywhere
Despite these differences, three things have proven constant no matter where I’ve worked:
- Clarity beats cleverness, every time.
- Consistency builds trust faster than any single brilliant campaign ever could.
- Emotional truth — actually knowing what a brand stands for — travels across cultures even when the visual language changes completely.
Branding across borders was never about building one template and translating it. It’s about protecting a consistent core truth while letting its expression flex for the people you’re actually speaking to.
